OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME : To support high-burden countries to ensure evidence-based policies and strategies are in place to achieve universal access to high quality health services for maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (MNCAH), and increase coverage and quality of effective MNCAH interventions among pregnant women, newborns, children and adolescents, and to create mechanisms to measure the impact of those strategies.
Description of duties: -Identifies and collaborates with leading experts from within and outside of WHO for identifying research priorities in the area of adolescent health and development and early child development, and promotes research in priority areas. Provides technical support in development and implementation of research and optimizes integration with other health programmes and collaborates with other departments. -Identifies opportunities and needs, and designs operational research on optimal delivery strategies for interventions to improved adolescent health and development, for example, to address multiple health risk behaviours. -Promotes research on early child and adolescent development, recognising the importance in human development. -Initiates, designs and coordinates appropriate global strategies, approaches and interventions for improving adolescent health and development. -Develops guidelines and tools for improving adolescent health and development. -Advises on policy development to support the interventions, including policy measures and community based interventions. Develops methods for assessing capacity of national and local structures to deliver essential interventions optimally; promotes the inclusion of adolescent health and development in relevant WHO programmes dealing with issues related to adolescents (e.g. Prevention and management of NCDs, reproductive health, nutrition, immunization, HIV, violence and injury prevention, health systems and other relevant programmes). -Collaborates closely with member states and partners in seeking consensus on technical matters and joint action required for improved adolescent health and development. -Promotes collaboration between the department and other concerned agencies and organizations in developing countries (UN agencies, FIGO, IPA, ICM, NGOs and CBOs). -Advocates and mobilizes resources for the work on adolescent health and development and early child development. Achievement activities include: Promotes research on effective prevention and management of adolescent health and development problems and early child development as part of the maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health survival strategy; develops and reviews existing guidelines to include new research findings in effective delivery of interventions for adolescent health and development ; develops technical guidelines for development of national standards and integrated programmatic guidelines for implementation of adolescent health and development interventions; participates in organizational activities related to adolescent health and development, ensuring that the highest technical standards are consistently reflected in WHO's work in this field.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Essential A degree in medicine from a recognized university. Postgraduate degree in public health, epidemiology or international health related to adolescent health and development. Desirable Training in public health and/or clinical and research methodology. PhD in an area relevant to adolescent health and development.
Skills:  Extensive knowledge of the field of adolescent health and development; including epidemiology of adolescent health and development and interventions to improve it. Knowledge of child health and early child development. Ability to identify priority issues for effective adolescent health and development, in particular in the context of national strategies for maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health; to maintain close contact with research partners, Member States and associated funding agencies on all matters related to research, development, planning, coordination and monitoring of activities in this field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with international and national staff at all levels. Ability to manage research projects, develop guidelines, produce documents and reports for dissemination. Excellent writing skills documented by publications in high impact journals. Experience: Essential A minimum of ten years of experience in the field of adolescent health and development, including some experience in developing countries; experience in conducting research in this area. Experience in the development of guidelines in developing countries. Publications in international peer reviewed journals in the areas of adolescent health and development Desirable Experience in the design and evaluation of programme interventions. Experience in conducting large-scale intervention or implementation research studies. Experience writing documents and reports; experience in teaching and training. Experience in research on child development.
Languages: Essential Expert knowledge of English. Intermediate knowledge of French.

Annual salary: (Net of tax) USD 80,887 at single rate USD 87,069 with primary dependants	Post Adjustment: 105.5 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
