Description
Founded in 2007, the International Association of Public Health Logisticians (IAPHL) is a global community of practice that promotes the professional development of people working in public health supply chain management. IAPHL is dedicated to improving public health supply chain management (SCM) and commodity security by promoting the professional development of public health logisticians. The association supports logisticians worldwide by providing a community of practice where members can network, exchange ideas, and improve their professional skills.
IAPHL has grown remarkably from an initial listserv created for 30 alumni from a training held in South Africa for a USAID-funded JSI project, to a membership of almost 4,000 members in 138 countries as of October 2016. It has attracted members from important donors and funders, including USAID, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, GAVI, and the Global Fund. Thanks to collaborative efforts undertaken since 2013, and the rich online discussions that have resulted, IAPHL’s network has expanded to include people working in specialized areas such as vaccine supply chains and humanitarian assistance. IAPHL is widely recognized in the global health supply chain community as the premier community of practice in the sector.
JSI seeks to fill the position of IAPHL Executive Director with a talented and passionate community-builder. This job is for a leader who can act as champion, strategist, networker, and fundraiser for the organization. The ED will oversee the current operation and facilitate the growth of IAPHL from an online community of practice into a bonafide professional association and robust membership organization. The ED will report to the IAPHL advisory group and to a senior JSI representative. This is a full time position based in Nairobi, Kenya. The initial funding for this position is for one year and is renewable based upon the incumbent’s leadership, oversight, and successful fundraising for IAPHL..
Responsibilities
The ED will assume overall responsibility for all aspects of IAPHL: strategy, engagement, direction, activity, and finance. Specifically, the Executive Director’s responsibilities include the following:
Provide strategic leadership and vision to IAPHL
● Implement and evolve the current vision for the growth of the organization into a professional association, with its own particular niche among supply chain organizations.
● Facilitate on-going engagement with the advisory group, including planning and holding routine Advisory Board meetings, reporting on progress against the current workplan, and documenting key decisions.
● Updating IAPHL guiding documents to reflect ever evolving vision
Professional daily operation of the IAPHL
● Serve as the primary point of contact for IAPHL
● Oversee the listserv and membership relationships
● Manage communication and workflow between DC and Kenya
● Ensures the development and implementation of workplans against all donor requirements
● Collaborate with existing and new IAPHL stakeholders (members, funders, operations team, potential funders, advisory board members)
● Collaborate with other initiatives, such as People that Deliver, TechNet-21, Humanitarian Logistics Association, etc…
● Report IAPHL progress and achievements to stakeholders
● Oversee the listserv, including moderated discussions, member inquiries, etc.
● Oversee website updates and management of social media
● Overall budget monitoring (all sources of funding), in conjunction with the program officer and US based financial personnel.
Raise funds and create partnerships to ensure IAPHL sustainability
● Develop a sustainable funding model for IAPHL
● Mobilize new revenue sources from institutional partners
● Develop new partnerships with collaborators
● Seek out funding from existing and new sources
● Identify, engage and mobilize new institutional partners and global health programs to support and actively participate in IAPHL
● Establish strategic alliances with other associations (Humanitarian Logistics Association, APICS, Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, etc.)
Representation of IAPHL in key fora with a multitude of stakeholders
● Represent and promote IAPHL at relevant international and national forums and with countries and various partners including the private sector, and communicate IAPHL priorities and progress within the larger health community.
Qualifications
● Advanced degree in pharmacy, public health or related field or equivalent experience.
● Minimum of 10 years of experience in public health, health supply chain management, or pharmacy management.
● Proven track record that demonstrates leadership skills, project management, budget and resource management experience, and client relationship management capability.
● Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills; full professional fluency in English; proficiency in French, Spanish, or other major foreign language a plus.
● Strong initiative and self-motivation required, with a commitment to teamwork and effectiveness within a non- hierarchical, participatory management environment.
● Ability and willingness to raise funds in support of the association.
● Ability to travel internationally.
