Fritz Institute and CILT (UK) are pleased to announce the USAID sponsored 2015 Scholarship Programme for the humanitarian logistics certification programme. A total of 40 full tuition scholarships will be available, 27 for the on-line courses: Certification in Humanitarian Medical Logistics Practices (MedLog) and 13 for Certification in Humanitarian Logistics (or Certification en logistiques humanitaires: the course is available in French and English).

The Certification in Humanitarian Medical Logistics Practices (MedLog) will be of particular interest and relevance for those involved in health supply chains that have a humanitarian component.

HEALTH SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT 

What is it about?

Supply chain excellence requires that all of the functions of a supply
chain work together efficiently. For example, decisions about product
selection must inform decisions about distribution modes, frequency of
delivery, and storage specification. Similarly, rational use of
pharmaceuticals is a critical for accurate quantification- which, in turn,
effects procurement planning. Any supply chain strategy must consider these
interactions and the associated trade-offs between alternative approaches.

The course structure is based on the 6 + 1 rights of a health supply chain:
the right goods, the right quantity, the right cost, the right condition,
the right place, the right time, and the right interventions.

PSA's training focuses on the higher-order skills required by supply chain
managers to understand the end-to-end requirements for a sustainable health
supply chain, rather than a narrow focus on individual activities. It is
therefore important for everyone involved in supply chain management to
have a demonstrable competence in each function.

SUPPLY CHAIN CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT

What is it about?

Supply Chain Capacity Development (SCCD) is crucial for meeting the growing
demands on aid delivery and as a key component of health system
strengthening. SCCD is a complex and costly undertaking, which requires
skills and knowledge beyond operational supply chain expertise. It is no
longer about forecasting or procurement for the next campaign, or
fire-fighting stock-outs. It is about systematically preparing for and
undertaking capacity improvements.

The course focuses on national health supply chain systems strengthening
and related theories of change. Participants learn about what makes a
supply chain functional, and how to approach supply chain capacity-building
systemically, to make the most of supply chain development activities.
Participants will also learn about the tools and techniques for embarking
on SCCD reforms within their organization, to detect early warnings of
potential stock shortages, and to manage the entire supply chain capacity
development programme cycle for successful and sustainable development.

capacity development of human resources. We use a locally-grounded approach
which looks at five areas: '˜policy and planning','leadership development'
'workforce development', 'performance management and retention' and
professionalization. When applied, the strategies, tools and techniques
developed in this course will enable participants to engage in meaningful
management and long term capacity development of the human resources they
rely on to manage their supply chain.

Who should attend?

This course will be beneficial to any mid- or upper-level manager
responsible for managing human resources in health and humanitarian supply
chains, and capacity development employees from technical and multilateral
organisations who engage with governments to promote systematic development
of human resources.

Criteria for sponsorship by IUPHAR to the Medicines Utilization  Research in Africa (MURIA) workshop and symposium in Botswana 26-29 July 2015.

The MURIA workshop and symposium organizing committee reaches out to
clinical pharmacologists and MD/ MBBS doctors with a pharmacology
background in the African region who can make significant
contributions to learning and exchange of research ideas and be able
to actively participate in discussions on the rational use of
medicines in Africa in the English language.  The MURIA organizing
committee also seeks to ensure a balanced gender representation among
potential participants.

The MURIA organizing committee has therefore identified four main
criteria for selecting IUPHAR candidates to award sponsorship for
attending and presenting at the MURIA workshop/symposium in July 2015.
These are:

1.   Applicants must be MD/MBBS physicians from academia
(mainly from Universities) with a clinical pharmacology/ pharmacology
qualification

2.    Alternatively, applicants can be representatives from
think tanks such as those from research institutions based in the
African region with an MD/MBBS qualification with a clinical
pharmacology/ pharmacology background

3.   Applicants can also be critical thinkers from the
African region that generate policy-oriented research, analysis and
advice to inform medicine policy development with an MD/MBBS and
pharmacology/ clinical pharmacology qualification. Applicants can be
from Ministries of Health, medical AID schemes, and private medical
practitioners dealing with medicines use

4.  IUPHAR sponsorship will only be given to those who
submit an abstract that is accepted by the organizing committee
(submission deadline end May 2015). Preference will be given to
applicants whose abstract has been selected for an oral presentation.
Please indicate in your abstract submission that you are eligible for
the IUPHAR sponsorship
 (Abstract forms and details can be found on

The successful applicant will be notified
by June 3 2015. The MURIA Group's decision will be final.

Additional information about the IUPHAR sponsorship:

Sponsorship will be limited to the following items:

• Return airfare (up to a maximum of US$500 – greater in
exceptional circumstances upon request up to a maximum of US$750 per
person).

•  Registration fee (equivalent to US$125.00 – this will be
paid for by the MURIA group)

•  Accommodation for 3 nights in the Oasis Hotel, Gaborone,
Botswana (this will be organised and paid for by the MURIA Group)

The cost of the airfare (up to US$500 or more in exceptional
circumstances) will be refunded after the MURIA meeting in July on
receipt of the invoice documenting the details (this can be given
together with bank details to the MURIA organisers in Botswana).

Announcement of the International Course on Rational Use of Medicines: A Focus on HIV, TB and Malaria at IIHMR University, Jaipur, India, from January 5 to 16, 2015

BACKGROUND

Under the UN initiative for Universal Healthcare Coverage, a public healthcare system can serve at its best only with access to essential medicines. Having economical measures in place to fight major diseases is not enough to extend basic healthcare services to those who cannot afford it.

The whole effort of extending the basic healthcare service to the deprived/ underprivileged can attain highest level of success with appropriate use of resources combined with effective and efficient systems/orders

Rational use of medicines plays a vital role in healthcare systems. Essential medicines are still inaccessible for population struggling with poverty and are still fatally affected by HIV, tuberculosis and malaria; Emergence of antimicrobial resistance continues to pose a global problem in handling the management of these diseases. Access to medicines can be best ensured by proper selection and use of medicines, affordable prices for quality medicine, sustainable financing and reliable heath system.

Irrational medicine use is a public health problem worldwide. Counterfeit and substandard medicines also create an impediment in access to quality medicines; Given the number of lives being claimed each year from diseases that can be easily treated and/or prevented, there is an urgent need to put in place advanced and tangible policies that would ensure access to essential medicines.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

The Institute of Health Management Research at IIHMR University, Jaipur has been contributing towards this very topical issue of international importance; through its flagship WHO sponsored International Courses in Promoting Rational Drug Use in Communities (PRDUC); Since 2003, 11 PRDUC programs, 3 international courses on Anti-retroviral and Related Drug Supply Chain Management in Low Resource Settings, 2 international training courses in Pharmaceutical Management in Hospitals, one each program on Rational Use of Medicines with focus on HIV, TB & Malaria,  and International Procurement of Medicines; Health Supplies have already been organized by the IIHMR.

In view of the current global focus on HIV, TB AND Malaria, a two weeks International Course on Rational Use of Medicines - A Focus on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria will be organized at IIHMR from January 5-16, 2015.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

To enable participants to understand and apply the concepts and principles of rational use of medicines, essential medicines, standard treatment guidelines, national and international medicine policy environment towards ensuring access to medicines with appropriate services, practical approaches in developing effective strategies for change with an additional focus on the diseases of poverty HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

The specific objectives of the program are:
To enable participants understand and comprehend the concepts and principles of access to medicines with tools and intervention to promote rational use of medicines
To facilitate appreciation of the significance of a national and international medicine policy environment and how it affects the course of healthcare system
To provide key information and expertise towards ensuring better affordable access to medicines and healthcare services
To share strategies and conscious actions to promote rational use of medicine with focus on HIV, malaria and tuberculosis,
To expose the participants to practical approaches in developing effective strategies for change.

TARGET GROUP

The program is meant for policy makers, management Staff from Ministries of Health, program managers of HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria, NGO officials responsible for national and local programs, development aid agencies, social scientists, doctors, pharmacists and other public health professionals interested in promoting rational medicines use in HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The number of participants would be restricted to 30.

TRAINING APPROACH and LANGUAGE
The program will use a mix of lecture by resource persons to introduce the lead concept and encourage active interaction by the participants through classroom discussions, group work and presentations. The course will be conducted in English.

DURATION AND VENUE
The programme is of 2 weeks duration. The program will start at 09:00 am on Monday, 5th January 2015 and conclude in afternoon on Friday, 16th January 2015. The program is scheduled to be held at Institute of Health Management Research, IIHMR University, Jaipur.

PROGRAM FEE:
The Program Fee of US$ 1000 + 12.36% service tax per international participant covers twin-shared air-conditioned accommodation at the Institute Guest House, tuition, course materials, field visit, and airport pickup, with breakfast, lunch, dinner and tea/coffee during the program. For accommodation on single occupancy basis USD 20 per day will be charged extra.

WHO International Nonproprietary Name Programme Course

The WHO International Nonproprietary Name Programme will organize a training course on INN , which will be held via Web.

The purpose of this training course is to improve communication between the INN Secretariat and the INN interested parties as well as knowledge of the INN system, by giving participants the opportunity to learn more on INN and to become familiar with the newest INN tool, namely the INN Online Application.

The training course will take place on 29th January 2015.
