Epidemiologist (EMARIS)-Consultant



Job description

Westat is seeking a consultant who will be based in Egypt. You will provide epidemiologic services to assist senior epidemiologists in establishing and implementing the Eastern Mediterranean Network for Acute Respiratory Infections (EMARIS) Network in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). The EMARIS Network is a network of EMR countries participating in country-based SARI surveillance that monitors baseline trends, describes seasonality of influenza in each country, provides an early warning system for epidemics, and provides better understanding and monitoring of high-risk groups within the population. Responsibilities include the following:
  • Conduct substantive literature reviews and/or analysis of existing literature and data.
  • Draft protocols, grant applications, Institution Review Board (IRB) documents, guidelines, standard operating procedures, and training manuals.
  • Draft data collection instruments or questionnaires for use in Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and web-based formats.
  • Assist in data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, grants, and manuscripts, including summarizing data in various formats (tables, graphs, posters, abstracts, and oral and written reports).
  • Assist in conducting outbreak investigations, trainings, health utilization surveys, and networking activities.
  • Provide technical assistance, data collection, analysis and reporting, training, protocol development and Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, report and manuscript writing, and other duties as part of usual epidemiologic services.
  • Develop presentations, training materials, abstracts/ posters for GDDRP, conferences, trainings, and technical meetings.
Requirements:
  • A master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, or biostatistics and 2-3 years of experience in field epidemiology and surveillance, designing, implementing, analyzing, and presenting epidemiology studies are required.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English required.
  • A minimum of 1 year of previous international work experience is essential; experience in Egypt or in the Middle East is a plus.
  • Experience in the use of PDAs for epidemiologic research preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, Powerpoint), SPSS, SAS, Access, and Epi Info.
  • Candidates with evidence of ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals is preferred.
  • The ability to work both independently and on a team in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Candidates must be able to obtain security clearance at the level for public trust for non-sensitive positions before the contract is awarded.
  • Candidates must obtain an Egyptian work permit or obtain U.S. Embassy security clearance, if applicable.
